Eviction Relief and Recovery

Eviction Relief and Recovery

From Alex V

Alex and Rebecca have been evicted as a result of the LTB's harsh COVID eviction crackdown. We're forced to say goodbye to our home and garden, and need support to cover the costs of rent arrears and an emergency move.

Thank you so much for this tremendous outpouring of generosity, we are truly overwhelmed. This makes a major difference, you have no idea.
We will be able to pay off the immediate amount owing of $3500. We have decided to increase the goal to $5,000 which reflects the total amount owed in arrears, minus donations we received external to this platform. Any additional money raised will be distributed to the crowdfunding campaigns of other queer people in need (we already started doing so, then realized that we're acting a bit too soon and need to take care of our own debt first).
Anyway: we've increased the goal, and we're unbelievably grateful for everything you all have donated so far. Thank you, truly.

We're saying goodbye to our beloved apartment and our beautiful garden — we kept our rent and the LTB, empowered by provincial laws that encourage COVID evictions, is punishing us for it.

Now we need to raise a ton of money to cover the costs of our move, rent arrears, and to help ensure we can do it all safely and efficiently, without danger of COVID infection, injury, or further financial loss, particularly while Alex recovers from her transition-related surgery this summer.

The LTB is ordering us to pay our millionaire landlord nearly $6000 in arrears and damages. We have determined a payment plan that is manageable, but will still add several hundred dollars to our monthly costs, every month, for the near future, on top of the excessive costs of an emergency move. This fund is devoted to relieving some of that immediate burden, and preventing us from entering a complete financial tailspin. Our first payment is for $3,500, due immediately.

We hate that we have to do this, especially given our relative racial and class positions. It does not feel good to ask our fellow community members to bail us out. Our goal is not to ask for payment for the good work and good will that we have developed over years of partying, organizing, caring, and struggling alongside you all. We love our community, and we know that everyone is struggling. But needless to say, this big sudden cost has put a huge obstacle in our career plans, our education plans, and our transition plans. Alex must now postpone her surgery, and draw from the funds she had set aside for recovery (this is now the second time that Alex has had to cancel her plans for transition-related care as a result of the pandemic and devote the funds set aside for it to paying rent). This also adds immense stress and burden to Rebecca, a frontline community nurse, who is now forced to devote all their savings to paying off our landlord instead of building their career in radical care and proceeding with their transition as planned. We are asking for help in escaping this crisis. Please donate, and please share.

You can also donate via PayPal (paypal.me/alxvrmn) or EFT to [email protected].

This photo is of our gay cat, Mimi, looking out from the kitchen window onto our backyard. When we first moved in, the backyard was full of debris and rubble, and we turned it into a green, vibrant space over three years of hard work, by hand, investing in it out of our own pockets. If you've visited the garden, you know this was a labour of love, and how much it means to us. We are losing it all in one month.
